Guatemala has no free trade agreement with China: you pay the full import duty (DAI 10% on CIF) plus VAT (12% on CIF+DAI) — in total, close to 23.2% of the CIF value goes to taxes before your container even touches land. A supplier who fails on quality doesn't just ruin the order — it means that 23% is lost too.
Most suppliers on Alibaba communicate in basic English. In Spanish, communication is practically nonexistent. Every misunderstanding in specifications — dimensions, materials, load capacity, finishes — becomes very expensive once the container is already sailing toward Puerto Barrios or Santo Tomás.
When a supplier fails, the claim mechanisms from Guatemala are limited. Alibaba's Trade Assurance has deadlines and restrictions. Without independent documentation — photos, video, measurements taken before shipment — you don't have a case. We give you that evidence.

What happens when you check a factory in person — and what doesn't show up in the sales videos
A few months ago, a Guatemalan client contacted us looking to manufacture expandable container houses for personal use. We'd been working together for weeks — floor plans, quotes, spec adjustments — when the moment that actually matters arrived: verifying the factory in person, before he committed his investment.
He wanted a 16-point audit. We were honest with him: that meant more time, more cost, and probably more than he actually needed for his case. We talked it through point by point until we landed on 8 critical ones — the ones that genuinely protected his decision. We didn't sell him the most expensive package. We helped him find the one he needed.
We drove almost two hours to the factory, in over 34°C (93°F) heat. And there we ran into something we'd rather tell him straight than dress up: the factory didn't have a sample unit assembled to show that day. We could have filmed anything and said everything was perfect. Instead, we explained the real situation and adjusted the plan on the spot — we filmed, point by point, every item on his list: electrical installations, outlets, finishes. Everything he needed to see with his own eyes, not through a salesperson's words.
What we remember most about this case, honestly, isn't the logistics. It's that at some point it stopped feeling like a transaction. There were weeks where everything moved fast — him reviewing every video, every plan, replying the same day. And there was a week where everything stopped completely, while he handled personal matters and coordinated with his partner in Guatemala. We didn't push. Cargo can arrive through Puerto Quetzal on the Pacific, or Santo Tomás de Castilla and Puerto Barrios on the Atlantic side. Your freight forwarder will quote the route. Import rules, duties and taxes differ by country and change over time. Confirm them with your customs broker (agente aduanero (customs broker)). SourciaVera is not a customs broker.

The Ministry of Economy (MINECO) lists the trade agreements Guatemala has in force: CAFTA-DR, the association agreement between the European Union and Central America, Mexico, Taiwan, Colombia, Chile, the Dominican Republic, Panama, the United Kingdom and Israel. China is not on the list, which is why the duty for Chinese goods is the one for the tariff line.
The tax and customs authority is the SAT. To import for commercial purposes you must be registered in its Registro de Importadores, which requires a NIT, an active establishment in the digital tax registry, affiliation to an IVA regime, standing in tax and customs obligations and at least one agente aduanero authorized by the SAT as your representative; a note on the same page says importers whose imports add up to more than US$10,000 FOB within a year must register (SAT). Goods from third countries such as China are declared on a DUCA-D (SAT FAQ). Only non-commercial goods of up to US$1,000 can be declared without an agent; commercial goods, whatever their value, go through an agente aduanero (SAT).

China supplied US$111 million of HS 8708 (parts and accessories of motor vehicles), 40.1% of what Guatemala imported under that code, the highest share of the four countries on these pages. Guatemala's declared imports, UN Comtrade, 2025, queried 28 October 2026 (subject to revision).
On an import, the customs-value field of the DUCA must include freight and insurance, and for a sale on FOB or EXW terms (where the supplier does not pay the sea freight) you declare those amounts yourself (SAT FAQ). Keep the forwarder's freight invoice and the insurance document together with the supplier's invoice, so your agente aduanero has every figure when the declaration is prepared.
The SAT explains that non-tariff permits are authorizations issued by government entities to regulate the import of goods that need special control, for reasons such as safety, public health, environmental protection or technical rules. It publishes a catalogue of non-tariff permits and the Arancel Integrado, where you can look up what a product needs. A permit that is missing when the cargo arrives is a problem you can avoid by checking the catalogue before you order.
iContainers estimates 25 to 37 days from Shanghai to Puerto Quetzal and gives no Shanghai-specific figure for Santo Tomás de Castilla or Puerto Barrios (iContainers); it is a forwarder's estimate, not a carrier schedule.
Do I need a customs agent to import from China into Guatemala? Yes for commercial goods. The SAT says commercial goods, whatever their value, are declared through an agente aduanero authorized by the SAT; only non-commercial goods of up to US$1,000 can be declared without one.
